Book reviews

Post by timd » Mon Jan 28, 2019 3:15 am

Chris Berthelsen's "Rainy day treasures" (2011) has been one of my fav self-published books for years.

One strand of Chris's work at the time focused on understanding creative, DIY use of city space; the other focused on exploring childhood. This book pulled both together, to look at his 4(?)-year-old daughter's walk from their house to a playground and back. It incorporates Chris's pretty daring design style; maps of the route; close-ups of what interests his daughter-- all interspersed with essays on claiming public space, and Chris's musings on what his kid is up to. (If you're not a parent, maybe your eyes are glazing over at this point.)

I first got this as a PDF from Mr B's site, and loved it so much that I dropped the $27 + shipping for the full book on Lulu.com. As with other Lulu books, the binding is a little lacking. After reading it 5 times, my copy isn't doing too well. But I still like having the bound version around, to page through.

Below are some book images taken from his site.
